We collect what we need to ship you balm and run a business. We don't sell your data. You have rights. We respect them.

What we collect

Things you give us:

  • Contact info. Name, email, phone, shipping address. So we can send you things and reach you if something goes sideways.
  • Payment info. Card details, billing address. Processed securely through Shopify. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Account info, if you make one. Order history, preferences. So you don't re-enter everything every time.
  • Messages. Emails and customer-service chats. So we can actually help.

Things we collect automatically:

  • Device and browsing info. IP address, browser, pages visited, time on site. To understand what's working, what's broken, and to keep fraud out.
  • Cookies. Small files that remember your cart and track site activity. You can disable them in your browser. Your cart might then forget you exist.

Why we're allowed to use it
We process your data on three bases. To do what you asked, which is process and ship your order. Because you said yes, which covers marketing if you opted in. And because it's reasonable to run a business properly, which covers security, fraud prevention, and improving the site. Where the law requires your consent, we ask first. Where it requires us to keep records, we comply.

What we do with it

  • Run the store. Process orders, ship products, handle returns, send shipping updates. The basics.
  • Make things better. Understand what people like, fix bugs, improve the site, stop fraud.
  • Marketing, optional. Emails about new products or launches. Unsubscribe anytime. There's a link at the bottom of every email. We're not needy.
  • Legal obligations. Comply with laws, respond to legal requests, protect against fraud. The boring, necessary stuff.

A note on sensitive information
Because NOOKS goes on skin, people sometimes share health details. A reaction, a condition, where they're using it. You don't have to, and we'd rather you kept it to what's relevant. If you do share, we treat it as sensitive information. Handled carefully, seen only by people who need to, never used for marketing.

Who sees your data
We don't sell it. Ever.

We do share it with partners who help us operate:

  • Shopify. Our e-commerce platform. Hosts the store, processes payments, and sees your activity, because that's how online stores work.
  • Shipping carriers. Australia Post and couriers need your address. Naturally.
  • Payment processors. Handle transactions securely. We never see your full card number.
  • Email tools. Such as Klaviyo, and only if you opted into marketing.
  • Analytics. Such as Google Analytics. Helps us read site traffic.
  • Advertising platforms. Meta, Google. Visit our site and you might see our ads on social. You can opt out, see below.

We may also share data if the law requires it, or if NOOKS is ever acquired by another company. Unlikely, but lawyers make us say it.

Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can:

  • Access. Request a copy of what we hold on you.
  • Delete. Ask us to delete your data, with some legal exceptions like tax records.
  • Correct. Fix anything inaccurate.
  • Opt out of marketing. Unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email, or just ask.
  • Opt out of targeted ads. Through browser settings, Global Privacy Control, or by contacting us.
  • Take your data with you. Get it in a transferable format.
  • Withdraw consent. Tell us, and we stop.

To exercise any of these, email hi@nooksbalm.com with the subject line "Privacy Request." Tell us what you want and include your order number or email address. We'll verify it's actually you, then respond within 30 days. Exercising your rights costs you nothing. Same prices, same service, no passive aggression.

Cookies and tracking
Small files stored on your device that remember things. We use them to hold your cart, keep you logged in, read site traffic, and show you relevant ads.

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in settings, though blocking everything might break your cart. To stop cross-site tracking by Meta, Google and others, use Global Privacy Control, browser privacy settings, or an ad-blocker.

International data transfers
Your data might be processed outside Australia, such as the US, where Shopify is based. When that happens we use legal mechanisms like Standard Contractual Clauses to keep it protected. Your data might travel. We follow the rules so it stays safe.

Data security
We use industry-standard protection. Encrypted connections, secure payment processing via Shopify, limited internal access, regular security updates. No system is ever fully bulletproof, and we do our best. Please don't email us your passwords.

How long we keep it

  • Active customers. As long as you have an account or keep ordering.
  • Inactive customers. Deleted or anonymised after 3 to 7 years, depending on the law.
  • Marketing data. Until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
  • Legal records. Some data we keep for tax and accounting, usually 7 years. Blame the ATO.

Children's privacy
NOOKS isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you're a parent and think your child has handed us their info, email hi@nooksbalm.com and we'll delete it.

Third-party links
Our site might link out to other places. Instagram, articles, the usual. Once you leave, you're covered by their privacy policy, not ours. Read theirs before handing anything over.

Changes to this policy
We might update this now and then. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date, and anything major gets an email or a site notice. Keep using the site after changes and that counts as accepting them.
